Wushu Unlimited: Your Path to a Better Life

When the people of Monrovia come to Wushu Unlimited to learn martial arts, they don’t just receive training, but a staff that is dedicated to helping them improve themselves. It is our goal to bring wushu and all of its opportunities for fun and good health to everyone. We believe you don’t need to be limited by your age, sex, or physical condition.

What is Wushu

Wushu is the national sport of the People’s Republic of China and is the modern form of centuries old traditional Chinese Martial Arts (AKA “Kung Fu”). Literally translated from Mandarin Chinese, “wu” is military, “shu” is method. Wushu therefore means martial method, or martial arts. It was developed with the ideal of a method to keep the peace and stop warfare.

The modern sport is broken into two branches, Wushu Taolu and Sanda

Sanda is the full contact branch of the sport and is judged by points obtained by scoring a direct hit, kick, or throw on your opponent.

Wushu Taolu involves empty hand and apparatus events and is judged on power, speed, coordination, flexibility and martial intent. Currently at Wushu Unlimited we offer classes in Wushu Taolu, but can arrange Sanda classes by special request.

Wushu Taolu

Wushu Taolu routines are performed solo, paired or in groups, either bare handed or armed with modern versions of traditional Chinese weapons and incorporate kicking, punching, throwing, seizing and joint lock techniques into set routine exercises according to international rules and involving various combinations of offense and defense.

The primary events are called Long Fist, Southern Fist and Taiji which are all empty hand routines. There are also, short apparatus events like broadsword and straight sword and long apparatus events such as staff and spear.

Wushu was an International Olympic Committee (IOC) sanctioned event medal event in the Asian Games and also a demonstration event at the XXIX Olympiad in Beijing, China for the Summer Olympic Games in 2008. It also is one of the leading contenders for inclusion in the upcoming Olympic Games.

The International Wushu Federation hosts the World Wushu Tournament biannually for Contemporary, Traditional and Junior events. To represent the United States in these events, the US Kung Fu Wushu Federation (USAWKF) sanctions US Team Trials of which the top 8 to 10 athletes are selected to represent the country with regional and national competitions held annually through the United States.

Here at Wushu Unlimited you can take classes in authentic Wushu from high level professional athletes so together we can prepare you for any competition, even if you are only competing with yourself.

Dedicated to enhancing our students

Learning a martial art can be the memorizing of moves, but at Wushu Unlimited we focus on teaching our students much more.

Martial arts is, in some respects, a way of life.

We do not mean that certain individuals earn a living from being in matches or teaching. Martial arts is a way of life because it practices mindfulness. When you practice a strike, a throw, or an exercise, the goal is to understand your body and be one with the movement. Eventually the goal is to, in time, be completely present in the moment and learn how to bring out that amount of centeredness when you need it

All the stresses in your life become much more manageable when you know how to find your center and understand that you have the mental tools you need to overcome the problem.

Wushu Unlimited is just that, unlimited. No matter your situation, wushu is for you. What some people think of as a limitation, we see as an opportunity. Critics of wushu have said that the term is too broad. But what others take as a weakness we see as a strength.

Let’s be honest, if it was a perfect world, people would never be too old to get around easily, or too young to be able to understand the concept. People would never be too out of shape to obtain their physical goals, or in too much pain to do the things they love. People would never be told that “only boys/girls do that” or “that’s too girly/tough”.

Wushu isn’t like that. There is a form that is suitable for everyone, no matter their shape, size, color, or experience. The world is a varied place with all kinds of people in it. One of the benefits of wushu is that there are many different types of forms whether it be contemporary wushu such as long fist, or southern fist or traditional wushu such as Mantis fist or Monkey Staff. Wushu also has both internal styles such as Taiji or Bagua, or external styles such as Ditang or Tongbei.

Our qualified instructors have been meticulously trained in how to find the correct form for anyone and the correct way to teach it to take advantage of your strengths and diminish your limitations.

Wushu Head Coach - Wang Wei

Coach Wang started his very successful wushu career at the age of 4. He joined the Shandong Wushu Team at the age of 10 and while competing there won championships in many classes and events. Upon completion of his professional wushu career, however, Coach Wang wasn’t ready to give up the sport that meant so much to him. At this time, he received a previously unheard of invitation from Beijing Sports University (BSU), the most prestigious sports university in all of China, to attend their school without having to try out due to his exemplary performance during his professional career. It was at BSU, Coach Wang obtained an even deeper understanding of wushu and was trained on how to teach it to others. After teaching both here and abroad for over 15 years, he now brings his expertise to us here at WU.

Afterschool Director – Jennifer Wang

Our Afterschool Director comes to us from a varied background of teaching and tutoring both here and abroad. Throughout her college attendance, Mrs. Wang did extensive tutoring of her electrical and computer engineering classmates and had a paid position as a lab/teacher’s assistant. She lived abroad in China for 5 years teaching all aspects of English, from reading, writing, speaking and proper pronunciation to TOEFL, SAT, and IELTS test preparation. She is fluent in written and spoken Mandarin Chinese and attended Beijing University where she tested out of the “Chinese as a foreign language program” and was able to enroll in the regular classes with the native speakers. She has helped to develop numerous class curricula to assist her students in learning multiple subjects like English, Math, History and the Sciences. We are very proud of the courses we offer the people of Monrovia and we welcome you to try one to see why Wushu Unlimited is the right choice for martial arts practitioners.
